Cyanobacteria are also capable of photosynthesis. However, the chemical processes involved are very difficult to study in a near-natural environment.
At the SPB/SFX experiment station of the European XFEL in Schenefeld near Hamburg, the team led by Patrick Konold from Uppsala University, Sweden, is trying to gain an unprecedented insight into the light-harvesting mechanism of cyanobacteria in their natural state. Changes in the so-called light-collecting antenna phycobilisome (PBS) appear to play a role here. In the experiment, the researchers use light to stimulate the bacteria to photosynthesis and then immediately examine the chemical changes with the X-rays of the European XFEL.
