    Abstract:
'Active galactic nuclei (AGN) with relativistic jets are the mostrnpowerful persistent astrophysical sources of electromagnetic radiationrnin the Universe. Blazars are the most extreme subclass of AGN withrnjets directed along our line of sight and emission relativisticallyrnbeamed in our direction. Their high-energy photon emission dominatesrnthe extragalactic gamma-ray sky and reaches multi-TeV energies. Thisrndemonstrates that they accelerate electrons to very high energies. Itrnhas long been suspected that blazars may also accelerate protons tornvery high energies and thus be cosmic neutrino sources. Beingrnextremely rare objects in addition to being bright, blazars are amongrnthe most readily testable neutrino candidate source classes.rnrnA number of multi-messenger monitoring campaigns have recently beenrntriggered in response to high-energy neutrinos observed with thernIceCube Neutrino Observatory from the direction of blazars. In thisrntalk, I will discuss the theoretical interpretation of thesernobservations and give an overview of the possible role of blazars asrnneutrino sources in light of the experimental results. Finally, I willrndiscuss the prospects of confirming blazars as high-energy hadronrnaccelerators with future neutrino observations based on theoreticalrnexpectations.'
