The XFELO cavity is 66 metres long, with diamond mirrors at each end. When an electron bunch passes through the alternating magnetic fields of the undulator, it emits an X-ray pulse. This light pulse is then reflected back to meet the next electron bunch less than half a microsecond later. After just a few iterations, the result is an increasingly sharp X-ray pulse that narrows in on one particular wavelength, much like a laser in the visible spectrum.
