Batteries are fundamental elements of the energy transformation. At the FXE instrument of European XFEL Raj Pandya from the University of Warwick, UK, is investigating how the electrons in lithium-ion batteries move through the cathode material when the energy storage devices are charged or discharged. At the atomic level, these processes are often extremely fast and not fully understood. For his investigations, Pandya uses X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy with a temporal resolution of a few femtoseconds. In this time, light only travels a fraction of the diameter of a human hair.
