Claudia Goy from Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg examines water with ultrafast X-ray photons from the European XFEL.
This experiment at the Materials Imaging & Dynamics instrument (MID) addresses the fundamental properties of the hydrogen bonding in water and specifically the question whether or not different ions can act either as “structure-makers” or “structure-breakers”.
Claudia Goy and her team will study the self-intermediate scattering function (SISF) of the oxygen-oxygen correlation (close to 2 Å) for two aqueous salt solutions (NaCl and MgCl2).
