Jaydeep Kumar Basu from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, uses the MID (Materials Imaging and Dynamics) instrument of European XFEL to investigate how special liquid droplets containing mutants of the protein superoxide dismutase (SOD) form. SOD plays an important role in cell metabolism. It is one of the most important antioxidant enzymes that protects organisms from oxidative stress. Jaydeep Kumar Basu uses X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to investigate how liquid droplets develop spatially and temporally at different temperatures. In biology, these processes play a crucial role in cellular processes, in the formation of organelles, and in the organisation of signalling molecules.
