European XFEL Pump-Probe Lasers: The Making

This time-lapse video shows the 11-month installation of one of the pump-probe laser systems at European XFEL. Pump-probe lasers are highly specialised pulsed optical lasers. They use high repetition rates, high energy, and ultrashort infrared pulses to stimulate a sample. This pulse is followed by an X-ray laser pulse that captures an image of the sample. Many images are put together to make a molecular movie that reveals the dynamics of ultrafast molecular processes.
